About This Site
Language for Health is an initiative of the Hindi Urdu Flagship at the University of Texas at Austin, funded by a grant from The Language Flagship. Its aim is to build a bridge between academia and the professional world by creating cutting-edge pedagogical material which will be of use to working professionals as well as students. The project focuses on language use in South Asian health practices. Our endeavor is not to teach either the science of health or the intricacies of various medical practices, but to draw attention to the language of medicine in South Asia and amongst the substantial global South Asian diaspora.
This project would not have been possible without the active collaboration of Rakesh Ranjan, Senior Lecturer in Hindi at Columbia University; Gabriela Nik Ilieva, Clinical Associate Professor of Hindi at NYU; and Jishnu Shankar, Senior Lecturer in Hindi at the University of Texas at Austin. The project reached its present form through a partnership between the Hindi Urdu Flagship, UT's Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services, and the FAST-Tex Program. In particular, Emily Cicchini (Special Project Manager, Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services), Coco Kishi (Senior Systems Analyst, Center for Teaching and Learning), Ming Gong (Web Designer, Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services), Justin Olmanson (Graduate Research Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning), Suloni Robertson (Web Designer, Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services), Sarah Medina (STA, Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services), and Nithya Saundara Raghavan (Teaching Assistant, Department of Asian Studies), have been instrumental in bringing the creative aspects of this website to the public. On the administrative side, untiring effort from Sarah Green, Associate Director for Administration and Student Programs at the Hindi Urdu Flagship, has made this project a reality.
The film clips which drive most of the lessons on this website were shot under the auspices of the Language for Health Project by Himanshu Joshi and his team, Mime Television Pvt. Ltd., in India.
